Tuscany was revolutionised by a lowly table wine by the name of Sassicaia when in 1940 the decision was made to plant cabernet vines with one eye cast towards the illustrious Bordeaux. Renowned winemaker Antinori made the first public bottling of the now great Sassicaia in 1968, becoming world famous a few years later. Since the area as seen a uprising of cabernet vines and subsequent sibling merlot being planted. The region now has classified areas such as Bolgheri which must be a blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Sangiovese. As these wines have developed throughout the 20th century, flavours such as blackberries, vanilla, truffles became classic and the wines have become some of the world’s most sort after. These reds make the perfect match to the best cuisine, especially strong flavours of red meats and game.
